Bayer, Herbert (1900-1985) , Austrian American painter, commercial artist, photographer, and architect. He was born in Haag, Austria. Bayer studied architecture in Linz in 1919, and two years later became a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany.
There he devoted himself primarily to mural painting, which at the time was taught by Wassily Kandinsky.
From 1925 to 1926 he studied typefaces, which stirred his interest in advertising and industrial design.
From 1925 to 1928 he was master of typography at the Bauhaus, which by then had moved to Dessau, and he also managed the workshop for print and advertising. During these years, the publications of the Bauhaus were characterized by Bayer’s typographic work.
From 1928 to 1938 he worked in Berlin, primarily in advertising. Bayer immigrated to New York in 1938, where he dedicated himself to advertising and exhibition design.
After he moved to Aspen, Colorado, he worked as a creative consultant at the local art center, and also spent his time creating sculptures sensitive to the surrounding landscape.
