Berruguete, Alonso (circa 1488-1561) , Spanish sculptor and painter, considered by his contemporaries the outstanding artist of Renaissance Spain. Born in Paredes de Nava, he studied first under his father, Pedro Berruguete, and after 1504 in Florence under Michelangelo. After his return to Spain in 1520 he was revered as the pioneer of the High Renaissance in his native country. In 1523 he was named court sculptor, painter, and court chamberlain.
Berruguete's most celebrated work is 35 choir stalls (1539-1548) for the Cathedral of Toledo. On the backs of the stalls are wooden reliefs depicting biblical events; above the cornice are patriarchs, prophets, and saints in alabaster. His other works include the retable of the Colegio Mayor de Santiago (1529-31) in Salamanca, with eight large pictures from the life of Christ, and the alabaster altar of the Holy Trinity (1538) in the Cathedral of Jaca. One of his best sculptures is the tomb of Cardinal Tavera in Toledo.
