Blakelock, Ralph Albert (1847-1919) , American painter, born in New York City. Largely self-trained, Blakelock at first painted forest landscapes and scenes of Native American life based on a tour he took of the West from 1869 to 1872. Subsequent works—melancholy landscapes of dark trees against dusky or moonlit skies, built up in thick layers of pigment—are considered masterpieces. Examples are Sunset (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.) and Moonlight (1885?, Brooklyn Art Museum). Blakelock's work was long unappreciated, and the impoverished artist suffered from mental illness, for which he was hospitalized from 1899 to 1916. He was unaware of public recognition when it finally came.
