Bonnard, Pierre (1867-1947) ,
French painter and graphic artist, one of the leaders of the later impressionist movement.
Born at Fontenay-aux-Roses, near Paris, Bonnard at first studied law to please his father. Art, however, meant more to him, and eventually he enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris.
There he met Maurice Denis, Édouard Vuillard, and others who were to become important in French art. In 1890 he, Denis, and Vuillard shared a studio in Montmartre. Early in his career, he gained a reputation as a stage designer, lithographer, and book illustrator. His illustrations for Parallèlement, a volume of verse by Paul Verlaine, are notable.
Bonnard became a leader in a branch of impressionism known as Intimisme because its members painted intimate domestic scenes. A master of light and color, he favored such subjects as self-portraits, nudes, still lifes, seascapes, and especially private interiors.
Among his works are Girl in a Straw Hat (1903, Milwaukee Art Museum), Checkered Tablecloth (1910-1911, Hahnloser Collection, Winterthur), The Table (1925, Tate Gallery, London), and Luncheon (1927, Metropolitan Museum, New York City). Bonnard died at Le Cannet on January 23, 1947.
