Breathed, Berkeley (1957- ) , American cartoonist, creator of the comic strips "Bloom County" and "Outland." Breathed's cartoons typically combine silly humor with social commentary. His irreverent treatment of political issues has brought him both criticism and praise. Breathed won the Pulitzer Prize for cartooning in 1987.

Breathed was born in Encino, California, and moved with his family to Houston, Texas, when he was 15 years old. He received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin in 1979.

As a student, Breathed created a comic strip called "Academia Waltz" for the university newspaper. He later adapted the comic strip into "Bloom County," which the Washington Post Writers Group syndicated from 1980 to 1989. "Bloom County," which features a penguin named Opus along with a variety of human characters, became widely popular. Breathed replaced "Bloom County" with "Outland" in 1989, but continued to include some of the characters from his earlier strip.
