Carpeaux, Jean Baptiste (1827-1875) , French sculptor, who was a leading exponent of romanticism. Inspired by the Renaissance Italians Michelangelo and Donatello, as well as by 18th-century rococo sculpture, he produced works outstanding for their animation and lifelike grace. His masterpiece, La Danse (1867-69, Paris Opéra), expresses joyful abandon with its gracefully intertwined figures, flowing draperies, and intense facial expressions.
