Coysevox, Antoine (1640-1720) , principal baroque sculptor of the French court under Louis XIV. His early work consisted of stucco reliefs and garden statuary for the Palace of Versailles; during the 1670s and '80s he provided many decorative works and ornamental busts for the interior of the palace. His somewhat constrained neoclassicism gave way after 1690 to a freer, livelier baroque style that prefigured rococo. His masterpieces are probably his portrait busts, including his ten portrayals of Louis XIV and his Great Condé (1686, Louvre, Paris), which are outstanding both for their penetrating characterizations and for their exuberant baroque modeling.
