Desiderio da Settignano, real name Desiderio de Bartolommeo di Francesco detto Ferro (circa 1430-1464), Italian sculptor, born in Settignano, near Florence, into a family of stonemasons. Desiderio worked in marble and was influenced by his great Florentine contemporary Donatello, but he developed a less dramatic, more refined and graceful style. Two works are definitely assigned to him: the tomb (begun after 1453, Santa Croce, Florence) of Carlo Marsuppini and the tabernacle of the holy sacrament (finished 1461, San Lorenzo, Florence). A number of portrait busts, freestanding or bas-relief, have been attributed to him, particularly that of a young woman in the Bargello, Florence.
