Gentileschi, Orazio (1563-1639), Italian baroque painter, one of the few artists working in the style of Italian artist Caravaggio who knew the master personally.

Born Orazio Lomi in Pisa, Gentileschi moved to Rome at the age of 20, where he worked until about 1621. He then spent short periods in Genoa and Paris, before being called to England in 1626 to work for King Charles I.

While Gentileschi's paintings lack the force of Caravaggio's, they are nevertheless notable for their clear and graceful draftsmanship, finely handled drapery, and dignified figure groupings.

He helped to spread Carravaggio's style to northern Europe, albeit in a much diluted form.

Gentileschi's works include The Annunciation (1623?, Pinacoteca, Turin, Italy) and Rest on the Flight Into Egypt (1626-1639, Louvre, Paris). Gentileschi was the father of Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the most notable female artists of her time.
