Goltzius, Hendrik (1558-1617), Dutch painter and engraver. His early works are in the northern Mannerist style; after a trip to Rome in 1590, however, he adopted a more measured neoclassical style (see Mannerism and Neoclassical Art and Architecture). Best known for his skillful portraits, he also produced engravings of the works of other artists, notably those of the German painter Albrecht Dürer and the Dutch painter Lucas van Leyden. After 1600, Goltzius experimented with landscapes, which, as the earliest Dutch examples of the form, paved the way for the great landscape school of the 17th century.
