Harunobu (1725-70), Japanese printmaker, who first introduced the polychrome (many-colored) woodblock print. Most of his prints, done in series such as Eight Parlor Views, portray scenes with young men and women, lovers, courtesans, or children. Noted for their grace of line and color combinations, his figures are slender and idealized, and his settings have an airy lightness. Harunobu's night scenes and his snow scenes display his exceptional talent for executing delicate natural effects. He produced some 600 prints and was popular for his many scenes of romantic love.
