Emily Zola wrote the early Monet. " He cannot paint a landscape without
adding ladies and gentlemen in their finery. Nature seems not to interest him
if it does not bear the imprint of our way of life."
But over the years the figures disappeared from Monet's landscapes, and
civilization was displaced by the direct impression of nature.
